Star Wars Fans

All those die hard Star Wars fans are going to see Episode II tonight at midnight. I am not loosing any sleep about it. I only saw Episode I once and honestly I don’t even remember much of it. It wasn’t any type of blockbuster movie for me. Nice eye candy and special effects, but really nothing of substance. All these silly fans are trying to relive a forgotten childhood dream, when movies actually meant something. When it wasn’t all about marketing and making the most money.
Oh yeah. I do believe that hairpiece George Lucas has is indeed a hairpiece…..the son of Chewbacca. There’s no way that hair could be real. That’s as fake as some of those broomsticks they used for light sabers in Star Wars.

Nintendo Game Emulator

Found a good Nintendo game emulator. We’re talking NES; none of this Super NES or Game Cube business. I’ve been playing Super Mario Brothers 2, the only game I ever beat. I never had a Ninetendo myself. My next door neighbor had it, so I spent many hours during my junior high years next door playing that game. Seeing it again pretty much confirmed that the graphics, although much better than Atari 2600, were pretty bad compared to today’s standards. It’s got a comicbook-like 2 demensional feel to it. I’m still trying to get used to the buttons. It seems to pause as the ALT button (jump) is pushed.

Prayer Breakfasts

There is a men’s prayer breakfast at church this Saturday. While I don’t usually attend meeting like this (I hate getting up early), I’ll probably go to this one. The young men who did the church service earlier this month will be doing the devotional at the breakfast. So I feel like I should go and support them.
If it seems like every other post lately has had to do with church or spiritual stuff, it’s because it has. I’ve been going to church retreats and planning for Bible camp, so all of that is on my mind lately.
This morning I woke up at 4:30AM due to a thunderstorm. Like always I turned on the TV to make sure it wasn’t a tornado. Since it was just a severe thunderstorm watch, I went back to bed. But I never got back to sleep completely.

Jeffwhittle.com Tshirt

I wore my jeffwhittle.com shirt at the retreat. So everyone remembered my name. The retreat went really well. In between devotionals and meals, the kids played kickball and capture the flag. Everyone seemed to have a good attitude and have a good time.
There is a puddle problem in the showers in the lodge. It wasn’t built properly or just doesn’t have the right water guard. So eventually there’s a puddle of water seeping out into the sleeping area by the middle of the morning.
I tested out my night vision camera. In almost no light, it was able to film perfectly, just as I expected. Basically the video looks like it is black and white with a hint of blue. You have to get really close to your subjects in order to view them.

Rambling Nonsense

I’m beginning to remember why I don’t do devos much. They usually turn into some type of rambling nonsense, much like this weblog. There’s so much I want to share, but I can never put it into words, especially on a level kids can understand. I’ve got a shell of a devo together for this retreat. I just need to practice it some more. Perhaps I need to join some type of toasters club and learn how to speak publicly. I guess I never got over that time in college speech class when the professor chastised me for mispronouncing Hiroshima. (HERO-shima or Hiro-SHEEMA)???? I got a B on the speech.
This time I’ll be sure and take a sweatshirt/jacket on this retreat. Last time I barely wore any tshirts – it was all sweatshirts all the time. This time the weather won’t be much different, even though it is 2 weeks later.

Smiley Face Bomber

They caught the guy who was dumping the pipe bombs everywhere. The news media has seemed to make a big deal that his favorite band is Nirvana. I’m not sure why that is significant. It’s just confounding the stereotype that Mr. and Mrs. American have that anyone who listens to Nirvana is obviously a deviant. I listen to Nirvana and I’m not a menace to society.

Feed Bags

Finally found some feed bags for that potato sack race. All this just after a couple of phone calls. And they’re free! A lady at church has offered them to me.
We’re going to have a summer youth minister intern at church again. This is a good program. It lets potential youth minister to experience real world items and at the same time help out with youth activities. Whoever it is will have a tough time being compared to our previous youth intern.
I’m a bit concerned about this devo I’ll be doing at the retreat this weekend. Not necessarily concerned about actually giving it. It’s more me putting it on a level which the kids will understand. There will be kids from 4th-6th grade at the retreat. I hope I won’t be going over their head on it. It’s been a while since I actually conversed with kids that age, so it is a learning experience for me trying to get on their level.

Relay Race Ideas

I’ve got to come up with relay race ideas for a youth camp I’m volunteering at in June. Here are my ideas so far:

  • The obligatory potato sack race
  • Hard boiled egg and spoon race
  • Something having to do with toothpicks and Lifesavers
  • Stuffing pillowcases

Anybody got anymore ideas?
And in the reject pile:

  • Let the kids drink a gallon of milk as fast as they can
  • Mailbox Baseball
  • Snake handling

I should remind myself not to take relay race ideas from Johnny Knoxville.
