R&B Music and NASCAR

When R&B Music and NASCAR Collide…this is the weirdest news story I’ve read this year. I didn’t know TLC had a large following among NASCAR pit crews.
There were goldfish in a bowl at the 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration of a couple from church. Probably bought just for the reception. Makes me wonder what will happen to them once the celebration is over.
Ray Combs, the late Family Fued host, was in the movie Overboard Ray committed suicide in 1996. Very sad. His role in Overboard was very brief, but I did recognize him.
So I’ve started trying to get rid of this spare tire, otherwise known at this gut. Sit ups each night. I’m also going to try to start biking. Something happened in since last summer. My body chemistry has changed to where I gain weight much easier. I’ve gone from a waist size of 29 to 32 in just a few months. I hate it.

Blackberry Winter and Idiot Summer

Why is it so cold? Must be 50 degrees outside. Let’s get these weather terms straight:

  • Blackberry Winter – cool weather right around the end of May
  • Dogwood Winter – cool weather in April when the dogwoods are blooming
  • Indian Summer – warm weather in the middle of October
  • Dog Days – hot weather during the summer
  • Idiot Summer – cool song by the Gin Blossoms
  • Blackberry Summer – a term I just made up just to confuse you.

Finally got my jeffwhittle.com t-shirt from copyleft.net. Took them over a month to get it to me. And their tracking program still says it’s processing. Anywho I’ll plan on wearing it this summer to the various summer camps to promote this website.
I don’t know what it is, but I can’t get to this webpage. Blogger and other traceroutes get to it just fine. Friends are able to view it too. But Comcast is being a pain about it. Their technical support offered only minimal help. They blamed it on the webpage provider.
My dad’s computer as a big nasty virus on it. Something about the icons moving around all the time when you try to click on them. Leave it to my dad to gleefully install a virus by clicking on any and all attachments he receives via email. Makes me wonder who or what writes these virus programs. Is it one of those introverted computer nerds that gets some type of joy when he discovers the virus has spread all around the earth? Or is it Norton themselves? My coworker had a theory that Norton and McAfee has a bunch of virus coders locked away in a back room writing viruses (viri?) to insure the company’s existance.
Oh and don’t worry about the Rooter Radio Station’s webpage vanishing forever. I’ve archived it on my hard drive for future reference. I figure sooner or later they’re going to take it down.

Rooster Radio

Did anyone notice the radio station Rooster 106 suddenly switched to Hip Hop format? I never listened to the Rooster very much. Seems like it was caught between the classic rock of 105.9 the Rock and the harder alternative rock of 102.9 the Buzz. Never really found its niche. One thing we don’t need around here is more hip hop music. This one genre of music is killing good music. Oh well, back to setting 107 The River in place of the Rooster on my car radio. The River does a great job of annoying me. Occasionally it will play a good song, and then ruin my listening experience by playing a boy band song right after the good song. Ugh.
No, I didn’t go to Baskin Robbins last night for my free ice cream scoop. I figured there would be a long line and I didn’t feel like driving all the way out to Donelson for 2 bucks of ice cream. Maybe next time.

Big Storm

There was a big storm that woke me up this morning at 4AM. Just to be sure it wasn’t a tornado, I turned on Channel 5. Poor Ron Howells. He was the lone weatherman stuck doing weather at 4AM for the handful of people who were up watching. Hopefully they pay him overtime.
It’s hard to believe that I was in China just a year ago. I thought May Day would have been a good day to visit. I was terribly wrong. Imagine an entire nation being off for work. The crowds were termendeous. Next time I visit, I’ll be sure to go during our holidays and not theres.
Tonight is free scoop night at Baskin Robbins. Not sure if I’ll drive out there. The word is out there this year, so I’m sure there might be a line for it. Baskin Robbins does give out free samples of their ice cream all the time. Yet now they’re promoting it and will probably give out much more in one scoop.

Learn How to Use a Search Engine!

I think alot of life’s questions could be answered by getting people to learn how to use a search engine. I get called all the time for simple computer questions. Most of my research is done via the internet. If these people could learn to use it, then I wouldn’t have to be bothered as much.
Channel 5 keeps interupting the Late Show because of this nasty tornado warning. Methinks its partly because of safety concerns, but also because they like to show off their new toys.

Winterized Cabins

On the retreat we stayed in 2 wings of a large “winterized” cabin on the girls’ side of camp. I had hoped we would stay in some of the smaller cabins, just for the convenience of not having everyone in the same cabin. Everytime I tried to go to sleep, someone would come in and turn on the lights thereby waking me up. The bathrooms were above par for a camp. Someone remarked anytime you don’t have to use flipflops when taking showers, it means your facilities are good.
I did get a chance to meet the caretakers of Short Mt. Bible Camp. Seemed like nice people. They even recognized me from some previous retreats I had been on.
I found out that Cake, Better Than Ezra, and Cracker are all going to be playing Dancin’ in the District this summer. Cracker and BTE will be the same night. It’s a good thing that good music is still alive and well in Nashville.
Pictures from Ottawa are online.

Lime Green Tshirts

On the retreat I ended up playing capture the flag Saturday. This was after Phil, our youth minister, begged me to play to even out the teams. I fell down and got some good bruises on my knee and hands. I was pretty frustrated at myself for letting myself get hurt. I was only supposed to stay in one place, but I strayed away and tried to catch somebody.
The rain this morning was very soothing. I woke up at 7AM to the sound of rain on the roof of the cabin. Later on I found out that there had been some very strong storms in the area, but I didn’t even notice. Just a few minutes later, the sun shined brightly.
We got lime green tshirts to remember the retreat. The illustration on the back is geared more toward the youth, but I’m always glad to add to the collection.
Phil asked me to teach a class of 13 year old boys. I had about 10 minutes notice on it. I think I did a good job. That age group is always at a critical age when making decisions that will affect how they turn out later in life. Usually I can relate to them pretty well.
While on the retreat I had a chance to experience some repelling. I had never done it before, but found it relatively easy. Felt almost like Spiderman on the rocks. Now I know how they do it in those movies.

Stranger within my own church

So like I said, I’m going on a church retreat this weekend. I know several of the adults are going and just a few of the kids. At times I feel like a stranger within my own church…where I’ve been going for 25 years. We get new people all the time and many of the older ones move on or die. Most people know me as the audio visual guy at church. Part of the problem is my own fault for not getting to know more people. Other times its just the complexities of belonging to a large church where not everybody knows everyone else. I do like going on these retreats which helps people to break down barriers and get to know people on a more personal basis. The main problem at church is cliques. Yes, even adults have cliques. If you don’t have a part in someone’s clique, then you don’t have a reason to know them.

Which Middle Eastern Country Do We Need to Invade?

$1.37 for a gallon of gas? It’s times like these when I ask myself which Middle Eastern country do we need to invade in order to lower gas prices. I know I’m an ugly American, but I like cheap gas! I can’t wait until we can get an alternative fuel supply so we can turn the Arabs over. They will be sitting on all that useless oil.
This weekend I’ll be going on a church retreat to Short Mountain, TN, near Woodbury. Here’s some pictures of the place we’ll be staying at. I went ahead and got a video camera with night vision to test out. Night vision seemed like a cool option to have. I’ve seen it demostrated before on a friend’s camera.
