It’s Fall Creek Falls….the crown jewell of the state’s park system. I’ll be heading out there Friday afternoon by way of Cookeville and Sparta. I’ve driven through Spencer, TN, before. There’s not much to it. Even smaller than Watertown.
What will we do at Fall Creek Falls? Probably some hiking, bicycling and other fun stuff. I’ve dragged my dad’s bicycle out of storage. Surprisingly the tires are still good….they are not flat after 4 days of being inflated. It isn’t exactly the best bike, but I’ll get by with it.

David Shannon Thought the Rapture was Happening
Well there was a slight minor occurance at church tonight. Being somewhat bored, I ventured into the church library and found an old home video tape. It was made for a giving campaign to fund a building expansion. This video was 10 years old and I was interested in seeing it again. So I brought it up the audio visual room. I put in the VCR. During the middle of the Wednesday night class the music from the video started playing over the sound system. I’m sure some of the old people probably thought the rapture was occuring. Quickly I hit stop on the VCR and pretty much sank deep into my seat hoping anyone who noticed it would quickly forget about it. Everyone had a good laugh about it and I’m sure it will be quickly forgotten (as easily as some sermons).
I’ve got a camping trip to Fall Creek Falls this weekend. Fifteen families from church are going. There are going to be 3 tents on our campsite alone, so I’m sure things are gonna get crowded. We’ll have to get out of the camping area for some space of our own. It will be an adjustment.
Pizza Stories
Just some pizza stories:
- Some of my first memories of pizza were my mom buying pizza kits from “the pizza lady.” This lady would suddenly show up at the door with little baggies of sausage and cheese. Later on we moved on to Kroger brand pizza.
- Some of the first franchise type pizzas we got were bought from Little Caesars. One time they got the orders mixed and we ended up having a nasty pizza with peppers.
- During college I ate pizza at least 2 times a week. Sometimes 3 times. On Monday nights some friends and I would each get small pizzas from Channellos. They had a special – one small one topping pizza for a dollar. Usually we could get together enough change to get one. Later they raised the price to $1.25. I got burned out on Pizza Hut personal pan greaseball pizzas from the college food court. I was also fond of eating cheap Tortino pizzas during college.
- Papa John’s Pizza was the delivery pizza of choice at Lipscomb. Rarely did I order a delivered pizza.
- My family and I almost always order a carry out pizza on Wednesday nights. It’s because Wednesdays are usually too busy for a traditional sit down meal, because of church.
- I’ve eaten pizza in China – at Pizza Hut and Pizza Inn. It was good, but sometimes didn’t taste the same as American pizza.
- My favorite pizza? Papa John’s has the best pizza here. Sometimes I start craving Little Caesars and then have to remind myself that they are no longer in the Nashville area.
- I got hooked on Tombstone Pizzas after trying a taste test at Krogers. Their marketing scheme worked because we always have at least 2 Tombstone pizzas in the freezer.
Rock N Roll Lifestyle
Getting psyched about the Cake concert this Thursday. Todd Burka, who is going, is a big Cake fan. I like some of their songs, but enough of their genre tends to get on my nerves sometimes. “Jolene”, “Rock N Roll Lifestyle”, “The Distance”, and “Sheep Go to Heaven” are all good songs and worth driving out for the free concert. From past experience, concert security searches bags and purses, so it is very unlikely that I’ll be able to sneak in my digital camera. Still, I might buy one of their CDs at a used CD place. Last time I got my Better Than Ezra CD signed by the BTE bassists after the concert.
My parents hosted a high school church devotional at the house yesterday evening. Our youth minister intern, Brian Manning, conducted the devotional. While he was talking, his cell phone vibrated and he just opened it up and hung up on it. Kinda funny because I would not have noticed if he had not said “Excuse me” and opened his phone and hung up. Felt sorry for Brian. He was driving back to Freed-Hardeman (near Jackson) last night. He had a class the next morning. He doesn’t formally begin working with the church until his short class is overwith at the end of this week.
The devotional brought back some good memories. When I was in junior high school they actually started up devotionals at members’ homes after Sunday night church services. I can remember the countless number of times Bill Speight led us off to some family’s house for a meal and devotional. It’s good to see that the basic concept hasn’t changed. It’s a good thing that has been kept up over the years.
Stay Virus Free: Don’t Use Microsoft Products
Stayed up late tonight watching the Survivor finale.
Henceforth I will never use a Microsoft based product as my primary email client. It’s just too open for viruses (viri ?). Got a call today from a lady at church who’s computer was infected by a virus. Sure enough, she was using Outlook Express. I think a good 50% of these viruses would stop spreading if a multiplex of email clients were used instead of the old standby, Outlook Express.
Happy Birthday, Melissa!
Happy Birthday, Melissa! My sister turned 30 today. We had a nice surprise party for her.
Seems like time has flown by. It’s becoming a reality more and more each day that I’m not as young as I used to be. It’s sad in a way, but a long time coming. When we’re young all we want to do is grow up. Once we’re grown we spend the rest of the time regretting that we never had enough fun while we were young.
So the prayer breakfast turned out good. The kids seem well prepared and not nervous at all. From growing up in a church environment, I can tell you it can be a very daunting task for a 12 year old to lead a prayer or read the bible in front of 300+ people. These type of opportunities give them a chance to feel comfortable in that type of environment.
Summer Mix
Each summer I put together a special mix CD to listen to to throughout summer. Most of the time it is hits I’ve just discovered. This summer’s CD will include:
- Phantom Planet – California
- Moby – We Are All Made of Stars
- The White Stripes – Fell in Love with a Girl
- The Strokes – Last Night
- Wax – Southern California
- Goo Goo Dolls – Here is Gone
- Blink182 – First Date
- Midnight Oil – Golden Age
As you can see I’m having trouble filling it up. Since I’ve been working from home, I haven’t been listening to the radio, so I don’t know any new songs.
That prayer breakfast is at 8AM tomorrow. I wish they’d roll it ahead one hour, so I could get an extra hour of sleep.
I’ll be going camping next weekend at Fall Creek Falls. We’re going shopping for food next week. I can’t even remember a variety of foods. For now all I know is hotdogs, hamburgers, and sandwiches. We’re going for 3 days and those foods are going to get old pretty fast. Somehow I’ve got to figure out how to cook a pizza over a open fire.
Lame State Laws
Tennessee has some kind of lame state law that says each year you have to get your car tested for emissions. It may be nationwide, but for the purpose of this discussion I’m going to assume that the brain dead Tennessee lawmakers drafted this law. Case in point: We had a perfectly good 1989 S-10 pickup truck. It could never pass the emission tests. No matter how finely tuned we got it, it would never pass. We ended up getting rid of it for a newer model. All this because of that stupid law. The burden of passing emissions should not fall on the consumer. Instead it should fall on the car makers. Don’t make joe user have to bend over backward to try to make their car pass emissions. It’s all a big conspiracy between the government and car makers to make us buy newer cars. Don’t get me wrong. I’m for pollution standards all the way. But this is too much.

Gumball Rally 3000….the best road trip/race ever. For the first time it’s in the USA.
