The nearest physical church (of any denomination) is just down the road. Lately I noticed they’ve put a strobe light on the steeple part and a small lit-up cross on top of the steeple. Kinda looks tacky….especially the strobe light. Yeah it got my attention, but left a negative impression of it.
This weekend I’m going on a church retreat with Corinth Church of Christ in Portland. We’ll actually be going to Taylor Christian Camp in Kentucky. This retreat couldn’t have come at a better time. As you can tell from reading the past posts, I am in the doldrums. So I am hoping for a fresh start with this retreat. The weekend after this one, I have another retreat with my own church. So I’ll have some busy, but relaxing weekends coming up.
I stopped by my sister’s kindergarten class again today. It was mostly for the supposed high school pizza for lunch (they instead had a different kind; I was disappointed). My sister had me reading to the kids and helping out with a simple math exercise. Those kids play all the time. I came in and they were out on the playground. When I left after lunch they were at recess again.
Devo
The youth devotional last night went well. I had all my notes together and seemingly presented it adequately enough. I would have gotten a picture of myself doing it, but it happened outside and in the dark. A flash photograph is just too distracting for these kids. Plus it makes me look kinda vain. But then again this whole webpage could make me look vain if taken the wrong way.
Mt. Juliet Elementary mentioned on the front page of today’s Tennessean. That school is a dump. They need to tear it down completely and build a new school from the ground up. I would avoid that school like the plague.
Career Opportunities in an International Five Star Hotel
For some strange reason, I received this email sent to the church email address. I am not sure why. So it is all settled. I’m moving to Nigeria to be a hotel worker. Be sure to check out the dollar amounts. If they are serious, then it is some high bucks! Funny, the last email I got from Nigeria was some scam wanting me to give someone my bank account number.

In other news….
I have the keys to the church van…..affectionantly known as “ole blue.” It is a Ford model from the late eighties. We’ve had it forever….since my sister was in high school. It is a bear to drive. Seemlingly no manuvability. I feel like I should go cruising for chicks or something. The guy who gave me the keys said he was going to be out for the next youth devo, so I should be in charge of driving it next month.
My Brain is Full
There’s an old Far Side cartoon which shows a kid in class raising his hand saying “Excuse me, teacher, my brain is full.”
And my brain is full. That’s what happens when you have a college professor….not a preacher….to come to preach on Sunday morning. He went overtime by about 35 minutes. Not that I am a big stickler for making sure preachers stay on time. This professor does this seminar all the time at various churches all over the US. So much of it sounded canned….as if you were listening to the same tape over and over. Robotic? Yes….
We did have 2 girls to get baptized today. What was weird was that about 15….yes…15 women and girls went “backstage” to the dressing room with them. I know that dressing room is not very big at all. Seems to be a trend these days to do this. It’s great to see support, but this is overkill. Give someone some breathing room. Give them a hug after they come out. Not while they are trying to change into dry clothes.
You know what Mt. Juliet needs? It needs an Office Max or Staples. Some kind of office supply store. I am tired of having to drive to Hermitage to get mailing envelopes. And I will need to get mailing envelopes for all these audio tapes that we are doing for this creation seminar at church.
That tv show “Freaks and Geeks” is the best thing to come along since “The Wonder Years.” Too bad they decided to cancel it. Normally they always keep the junk shows like “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” but they get rid of good shows like Freaks….
Growing Tired of the Creationism/Evolution Debate
I hate the Sony Mavica digital cameras. I knew image quality on a 3.5 floppy disk wouldn’t be very good. And my suspicious were confirmed when I got a hold of some images from a Mavica. Terrible quality. Grainy. Small. Not worth the price of the camera. You could pay as much as $350 for one of these cameras. Or you could pay the same price for a Olympus C-3000 and get much better image quailty.
As I sat in yet another Creation Evolution seminar session today I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the kids who were there. Here they were suffering through what amounted to a upper level biology lecture. Their parents made them come so they could find out exactly where the dinosaurs came from.
Some people salivate when they get a chance to argue creation and evolution. It’s all a big conspiracy. Those sneaky scientists are always out to disprove I for one don’t believe the scientists had a big meeting so they could disprove creationism. I do believe that scientists are logical thinkers and therefore wouldn’t necessarily believe in a creator.
Attending a Christian college has made be grow tired with these type of discussions. In our biology classes, chapel, and Bible classes I’d hear the same arguments over and over again in regards to creationism and evolution. I don’t care anymore. This has been discussed way too long.
We had a Creation/Evolution Seminar
We had a Creation/Evolution Seminar at church Friday night. I’m not too terribly impressed with the speaker (more on that topic later).
When we arrived it was raining. I dropped off my sister and dad under the carport of the church. They kept asking me if I wanted an umbrella. Nope. After parking I calmly walked through the pouring rain to the building. I don’t melt when a drop of rain hits me.
On a side note, the topic of Creationism vs. Evolution is fiercely debated throughout the country. I don’t care. It isn’t keeping me up at night. I was taught evolution in schools, creationism in the church. I am not warped because of it. I know what I believe and why I believe it. I certainly wouldn’t expect them to teach creationism in schools. Maybe there could be an understanding that they shouldn’t teach any of it. Leave philsophical questions to the philosphy classes. Scientific facts belong in science class. Faith belongs in the church. Easy solution.
Friday Five: Communication
1. Would you say that you’re good at keeping in touch with people?
Definitely. When I was in college, I compiled a list of email addresses from old high school friends. This list grew into a webpage for alumni. Friends have always remarked that I am good at keeping track with people. I used to send out letters alot, so to friends whom I wasn’t really good friends with….they were just at writing letters.
Communication is a two way street. If I can’t get anyone to respond after several attempts, then I stop trying.
2. Which communication method do you usually prefer/use: e-mail, telephone, snail mail, blog comments, or meeting in person? Why?
I usually return emails, especially if they ask a specific question. One thing I hate is when people forward me junk such as jokes or inspiring stories to my email address. I only want personal emails. Anything else is just clogging up my email.
Blogging comments seems to have become a form of communication. If people want to know what I’m doing, they can just come to this webpage. Otherwise when they ask what I’m doing, I’m just going to repeat what I’ve written on this webpage.
I rarely use snail-mail anymore, except for a few instances. Tower Records has a rack of free postcards. They usually have some pretty cool designs on them. Everytime I go by there, I pick up a stack of postcards. I send out postcards to kids from church when it is their birthday or if I want to congratulate them for doing something good (baptism, graduation, etc….). They usually think it is cool, and in some instances they tend to like you better for remembering their birthday.
I don’t like talking on the telephone. It’s more of an annoyance rather than a form of communication. I don’t have a cell phone because I don’t really need one.
I have a difficult time meeting new people in person. It is awkward for me.
3. Do you have an instant messenger program? How many? Why/why not? How often do you use it?
I use Trillian. It incorporates all of the 4 big instant messenger programs into one program. Recently Trillian has become nagware. It nags you every so often to donate money and upgrade to the pro version. The pro version has features that I just won’t use. It is definitely not worth the $25 they are asking for, especially when AOL could block access to their servers at any time. I would highly recommend staying with Trillian .73 instead of upgrading to Trillian .74 or Trillian Pro 1.0.
I use instant messengers quite frequently. It is any easy way to keep in touch with people. It doesn’t feel as though you are so far away.
Most of my friends use AOL Instant Messenger. This is sorta ironic because it is probably the worst instant messenger program. Easy to use, but has terrible limitations in features. You can’t rename any of your buddies, so you’re stuck trying to remember that Hotchick234o32 is your friend Lindsey. It is limited to 200 buddies. I have maxed it out since many of my friends have multiple usernames. I hate that.
MSN is probably the most professional acting of all of the instant messengers. I like it. However I don’t like that you have to suffer through people’s idiotic nicknames. Some people have the lamest nicknames. For example whenever one particular friend signs in, it always says “It’s All Out” has signed on. How am I supposed to remember who that is? I should be able to override someone’s stupid nicknames.
I really wish that more of my friends would use Yahoo Messenger. It seems like a cool setup and has good potential. We used it alot at work. However since then, I have promptly removed my former coworkers from my buddy list. So now, very few people I know use it.
ICQ is bloatware. It has a bunch of features that I would never use. I only know a very few people who use it anymore. It was the only IM program that I received spam on – people typing in random ICQ numbers in order to get their message out.
4. Do most of your close friends live nearby or far away?
I don’t have many close friends. It’s a long story, but due to past experiences I have found that it is probably best not to become too close with someone. Leave some breathing room. Otherwise if the friendship turns sour, you won’t have to worry about your former friend using information against you.
Most of my friends live anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour away.
5. Are you an “out of sight, out of mind” person, or do you believe that “distance makes the heart grow fonder”?
I try to keep track of my friends even if they are far away. However it is up to them to return my emails. If they don’t, then I can’t keep track of them. I still remember my friends even if they are far away. But if it goes for a long time without hearing from them, then I rarely think about them.
Getting my resume together
I guess I need to add to this weblog. You are growing tired of hearing about my woes. Probably thinking to yourself “Get a grip, Jeff.”
I’ve been taking job preparation classes at a consulting firm in Brentwood. They help you get your resume all together and get your prepared for a job, although they don’t actually go out and get you a job. My resume is done all wrong according to this consulting firm. So I’ve been redoing it. Always remember to use big words and showcase your talents. Never mention personal interests you have unless it specifically has to do with the job you are applying for. Listing volunteer activities helps, though.
I haven’t felt much like writing lately. Hence the short entries.
Church Directories
The church directories are supposed to be out soon. We actually had our pictures made at Christmastime, but somehow it took this long to get them. Anyways Kevin Bass gave me a CD from Olan Mills which contains pictures of the all the families at church. Sorta sad looking through this because some of the people have since stopped coming. Church is a revolving door of people. Just as some leave, more come in. Makes this directory out of date before it is even published.
I am afraid of change. Before being laid off I was pretty confident with myself and my abilities. Now, afterwards, I am not very confident with myself. I am somehow apprehensive about changing jobs…or actually going out on interviews. All of these job descriptions seem so overwhelming….
A good listener
Today I talked to my minister, David Shannon, about my job situation. He gave some good advice. He told me to make as many contacts as possible. He gave me the names of some people to talk to at church. David is a very sincere person and is a good listener. I guess that’s why he is the preacher.
I’ve got to prepare a devotional for the pre-teen youth devotional this Sunday night after church. I’ve selected the topic of “Looking for Good Examples and Being a Good Example.” Hopefully I can get one prepared and be able to practice it several times before actually doing it. I’ve been told the kids requested that I give the devotional.
They played a new song on Lightning 100 called “The Last DJ” by Tom Petty. Pretty awesome song. I hope it will get some airplay on some of the mainstream stations.
