Nutbush is a little more than a wide spot in the r Nutbush is a little more than a wide spot in the road with a cotton gin company and a church. Tina Turner lived here briefly during her early childhood. I can't imagine what a young Tina Turner would have thought of her extraordinary successful music career overcoming so many odds against her.
The original "Assembly of God" church building was The original "Assembly of God" church building was moved to its current location of "The Elvis Birthplace and Museum" in Tupelo in 2008. While visiting it, my wife and I were treated to a multimedia presentation of what worship must have been like when Elvis attended there in his early childhood. We were encouraged by the museum guide to sing along with hymns of "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," "I'll Fly Away," and "Just a Little Talk with Jesus.". My wife and I felt like we were the only ones among the visiting tourists who knew the words to the songs. We were raised singing those hymns. I began to realize that my Christian church experience was not all that different from Elvis'. Yet I am also aware that many folks during that visit may not have stepped foot into a church. With tongue firmly placed in her cheek, our museum guide said this church presentation did not replace church attendance. She expected us to attend church the next opportunity we had. Somehow I hoped that through this experience visitors who had not attended church before would be encouraged to investigate Christianity and form a personal relationship with Jesus.
